RECTOR
S. John the Evangelist is the only Anglo-Catholic parish in the Newport vicinity
and one of two Anglo-Catholic parishes in Rhode Island. The parish draws communicants from as far as Connecticut
and Massachusetts, and was the first parish in the US to affiliate with Forward in Faith.
S. John's is an Anglican Missal/1928 BCP/1940 hymnal parish. We have a strong liturgical
tradition and offer the full range of the services of the Anglican church (including morning and evening offices, choral evensongs,
a monthly benediction, weekday Masses - with an 8 am said and 10 am sung Mass on Sundays).
Our liturgical music tradition is among the finest in the state. We have a dedicated and
accomplished Schola led by a renowned choirmaster. There is a 33-rank 1894 Hook & Hastings pipe organ. A new console is shortly
to be installed and other major upgrades and repairs are being accomplished.
The present church building was erected in 1894 under the supervision of architect Creighton
Withers. The church includes a significant 1920s Lady Chapel by Ralph Adams Cram. The fabric also includes a superlative
collection of vestments, plate, fine arts, and other artifacts.
The property includes the parish hall (the 1875 former church), a large house occupied by three
parish families, and a seven-bedroom rectory (renovated by Charles McKim of McKim, Mead and White). The property is located in a
quiet waterfront neighborhood within walking distance of downtown Newport.
We are looking for a committed catholic Priest to continue the work of our Anglo-Catholic
witness to the community and the state. The applicant should possess strong pastoral skills, be a sound teacher of the faith,
and be skilled in the use of the Anglican Missal. Membership in the SSC or similar catholic-minded groups would be a plus but is
not a requirement.
Please examine our web site. Interested applicants should send a
CV and other information c/o "Search Committee, the Zabriskie Memorial
Church of S. John the Evangelist, 61 Poplar Street, Newport, RI
02840."
